50 precious words

I know I’m not saying anything innovative or new when I lament:

Writing is hard.

But even though it’s hard, I still can’t seem to stop.

That said, the past few months have, admittedly, felt harder to turn on the creativity tap. Even though I try to show up to the blinking cursor or the blank notebook every night, writing words has felt like dragging my feet through mud in a bog…

…while I’m wearing oversized boots filled with muck…

…and carrying a backpack filled with concrete blocks.

But then, I came across Vivian Kirkfield’s 50 Precious Words Challenge.

I had entered before, and I enjoyed participating. But then, somehow, life got in the way and I missed the challenge last year. Today, seeing all of the entries pour in as well as the rallying support of the kidlit community inspired me.

And my brain creaked and squeaked and out came this silly 50 word story below.

Is it perfect? No.

Was it fun? Yes.

Thank you, Vivian and fellow writers for sparking a little joy in me today.

IMAGINATION

I zig.

I zag.

Hey bad guys, stay back!

I twirl.

I fly.

Ooh, what’s that I spy?

I bounce!

I flee.

Ack, they’re after me!

I run.

I rest.

Hm, what should happen next?

But then...

Mom shouts.

“WHY AREN’T YOU DRESSED YET?”

Oops!

That’s what I was doing.
